Sermons on God's Promises
Genesis 27:27-29
In Genesis 27:27-29 we see the blessing given to Jacob. Though this blessing was attained through sinful means, ultimately it will be used to advance the holy purposes of God. In these verses it is prophesied that Christ will have a universal reign over all people, that this will be the means by which the blessing of the nations comes, that He will be exalted above all the people of God, and that the entire world will be divided on…
Genesis 26:1-5
In Genesis 26:1-5 we see that Isaac inherits the blessings of his father. What we see established in the book of Genesis is that God’s promises are often generational. This ought to inform our prayers and our work as parents. May God grant that our children would call upon God according to His grace, that He would be their God as well as ours.
Genesis 22:20-24; 25:1-6, 12-18
In Genesis 22:20-24; 25:1-6, 12-18 there are a number of genealogies recorded. Many see genealogies and skip them thinking they are unimportant. The genealogies of Genesis have a theological purpose. Here we see that the genealogies highlight the surprising ways the promises of God are fulfilled which points to their greater fulfillment in Christ.
Genesis 21:1-7
In Genesis 21:1-7 Isaac is born. God is faithful to all of His promises. The entire Abrahamic narrative turns on the birth of Isaac, and here, with the birth of Isaac, God shows that all of His promises will come to pass.
Genesis 18:9-15
In Genesis 18:9-15 God tells Abraham that Sarah will have a son in a year. Sarah falters in unbelief given her circumstances, and yet God affirms again that it will surely happen. We are reminded that nothing is impossible with God and that he will surely bring to pass all of his promises.
Genesis 17:15-22
In Genesis 17:15-22 God promises that Sarah will give Abraham a son. This means that the promises made to Abraham will not be fulfilled through surrogacy but through the almighty power of God, who is able to open the womb and give life as He wills. God will always see to the execution of His promises. Ultimately, He does not need man.
Genesis 15:7-21
In Genesis 15:7-21 God gives Abram a vision foreshadowing the future redemption of the Exodus to give Abram confidence about the promises of God. God does this as an act of grace that he might be encouraged in the midst of the trials of life. Though these kinds of visions are not given today, God still acts to give His people confidence in the promises He has made. The prophecies of the OT still function this way, giving us confidence…
Genesis 12:1-3 (Part 3)
At the end of Genesis 12:2 Abraham is commanded to be a blessing. This marks a shift in the promises of God to Abraham. They are now focused on others. Abraham receives blessings from God that he might bless others. It is through the blessings given to Abraham that the entire world would be saved as in him all the nations of the earth are blessed. Those who bless Abraham throughout the world are blessed and those who curse him…
Genesis 12:1-3 (Part 2)
In Genesis 12:1-3 Abraham receives great blessings from the Lord that fall into two parts. The first part deals with the blessings Abraham himself would receive. These include being made into a great nation, being blessed, and being given a great name. The gospel is contained in these blessings with Jesus Christ himself being given the highest name of all.
Hebrews 6:13-20
In Hebrews 6:13-20 the author shows why God’s people can rest in the promises of God. God has not only given a promise that cannot be broken in that God cannot lie, but He has also confirmed that promise with an oath. If one only had a promise from God that would be enough to be sure that it will come to pass, however, God, in His grace, gives the promise and then confirms it with an oath so that…
